I love this time of year,
especially in my secret special photo location where the grass
remains unmowed, and the trees are full and there are no
houses blocking the pretty view. Now is a good time to
get outdoor portraits. I'm booking well into the summer
months now so if you think you want photos done sometime this
summer, book early so that you get the date you're hoping for.

I think I found the winner of the "Happiest Baby Ever" contest.
Nearly six month old Mr. K didn't so much as whimper during our
shoot this afternoon. He was happy in whatever getup we put him
in, smiling away and cooing through it all.

Here he is in all his smiling glory.

And his beautiful family. I love when a people ask for shots

Ten Years

inflamatory eye condition. I've been sad, confused, angry, irritated,
frightened and finally, upon hearing that it looks to be improving, I

Well, look who's a big boy now! He's still one of the cutest, sweetest little
guys I know...apart from my own little man of course. ;)

And meet his new little sister, baby C! Oh my, she's so tiny
and sweet and tiny...did I mention tiny? It's been a while since
I've been in the presence of a little newborn baby, can you tell?

She was wide awake the whole time, little stinker. Maybe next time she'll
give us some sleepy pics too.

Self Portrait Challenge

I've taken on a challenge of doing one self portrait
for every week of 2009. By the end, I will have 52 self
portraits! I am rarely in photographs since I am the one
behind the camera, so I thought this was a good project for
me to take part in alongside many other photographers I know.
I won't share all of my self-portraits (you'd get tired of
my mug pretty fast, I'll bet), but I'll share a couple here
and there. I'm having fun with it.

This one is from this week. It's number four in my series so far.
I call it, "I earned my laugh lines fair and square!"

Now I can add published photographer to my resume! As you may recall,
I was hired by Cure Magazine to do some editorial shots of cancer
survivors in Seattle several months ago. I just recieved my copy of
the magazine with my published photos in it today and I am so excited!

Cure Magazine is a non-profit magazine dedicated to providing cancer
patients, survivors and their loved ones the most up to date information
about the disease in it's various forms. You can find more info at www.curetoday.com.

Bigger IS Better (when it comes to photography)!

Desk sized photos (8x10 and below) have their place, don't get me wrong.
But if you're looking to hang a photograph on the wall,
you're essentially saying that the photograph you've hung
is a piece of art you want to look at and admire on a daily basis.
If you wanted to buy a piece of art to hang on your wall,
would you go looking for a 5x7 or even an 8x10 oil painting?
Probably not. Same thing goes for photographs. If they're
meant to hang on the wall, consider a larger piece or a gallery
wrapped canvas. It's more impactful, less cluttery and really,
it just plain looks great!

Seattle!

I went to Seattle recently to take pictures for a national magazine.
I am so excited! Anyway, I just thought I had to share it here for
my blog readers. Whenever the articles are published, I'll be sure
to link you if possible. The shoots were for two cancer survivors
and the issues that they are dealing with. I had a wonderful time
meeting them and feel honored to have been chosen to help document
their strength. Though I can't share the actual shots I am sending
to the magazine, I will share some practice shots of the landmarks
while we were out and about that I used to set my exposure. It's
so pretty there. It really was such a great day. And a big huge
hug and thank you to my mom for being with my kiddos all day long
so that I could take part in this. What a great experience.

I did some funkier crops and processing on these, but I have them in the not-so-funky versions as well. :) These just called out for a toasty warm funky feel. I hope you love them.

Textured Art

I wanted to show those of you who have asked what can be done
to a photo simply by adding a textured overlay. I think it
makes the photo into more of a piece of art. It doesn't work
on all photos, but on the right one, it can really make the
picture spectacular.

If you are interested in seeing something from your set textured,
please don't hesitate to ask at your session.

Sneak Attack

I came back this evening to attempt to get some sleepy pics of
little miss newborn. Last time I saw her she defied sleep,
opting instead to keep an eagle eye on what was going on around
her. Today however, she fell asleep being cuddled by grandma
when I showed up. The next thing she knew, she was in the middle
of a sleepy time newborn photoshoot. Sometimes sneak attacks are best. :)

Ok, now on to the 6 things you may not know about me ….

1. I am afraid of getting sick. I got sick for two months straight
while student teaching and developed a big fear of germs and illness.
It's not an all out phobic, panic-stricken fear, but a still a fear.
I loathe being sick.

2. I have travelled through Europe and Puerto Rico, Canada and then
studied abroad in Ecuador to gain my BA in Spanish. I feel like the
experiences I have had in different countries has had a big impact on
how I view the world and my place in it.

3. For my fifth grade science fair project, my dad and I built a
volcano out of paper mache and then went to visit the chemistry
department at the local university. A professor there gave us a some
chemicals that when combined would make my volcano actually errupt,
with fire and all! I warned my teacher not to set off my volcano
indoors, but he insisted. So, we nearly set the classroom on fire,
melting the overhead projector. All the kids in my class were
super impressed. :)

4. I teach Kindergarten, though I really want to teach third grade.
I decided I wanted to be a third grade teacher in the third grade.
I loved third grade.

5. I love frosting. Cake's ok, but frosting rocks.

6. I could sleep for 10 hours a night. I love sleep.

This group of lively ladies don't all get together but once a year or so. It's hard to go so long without seeing your sisters or your daughter. What a perfect opportunity to get some fun portraits made. They even brought along the ONLY granddaughter/niece/daughter for a couple of fun shots. She wanted some photos of her own, but alas, the rain came. I know....rain in July. Ah, well, we got some great shots in before the drops began to fall.

New Locations!

We went scouting for new locations today and I think I found a great one. I love it there.

Then we found this cool wooden door. I think it adds that rustic look I love so much.

I love capturing her laughter....I can hear it just looking at these photos.

I also got some of one of our bestest girl friends (I did a vintage treatment on this one)

and some of her and her B.F.F. :)

It was a fun and productive day!

That's what she kept saying to me and waiting for me to get with the program and put a fish in there already! It's hard to explain that the fish lives in my computer and I'd put him there later. Ha ha! Gotta love a spunky red head. This little girl has a lot of love in her heart. It's just bubbling right out of her and it's evident in her sweet smile.

True story...the weather today looked to be terrible with high winds, unseasonably cold temperatures and drenching rain. As soon as our photo shoot time came, the skies parted, literally. His Turn In The Field

He had such fun running through the tall grass and yelling FEEDO FEEDO (toddler speak for field). He picked up big rocks, stomped in the dirt and had an all around great morning. Then we found out he has allergies. Oops. Well, at least it was fun while it lasted, eh?

The colors of the field today in the morning sun was so much different than the last time we visited in the late afternoon. It's interesting what just a few hours will do and it's important to keep this in mind as you think about what time you want to book your appointment, especially if you have an outdoor shoot scheduled.

She's Outstanding In Her Field....

Get it? Hahahaha. Yeah. That was one of my dad's famous jokes he told us whenever we passed by a field of cows grazing. They were all outstanding in their field. But I digress...

This is my very most favorite girl standing in my most favorite photo spot. I love it so much. It's a big open expanse of land with unmowed grass and huge old oak trees, a gravel road and loads of wildflowers and red grasses. It's my little piece of heaven. I don't know what I'll do with myself when they finally build homes there. Until then, I'm enjoying photographing there. If you're in the mood for some lush grass and wildflowers as the backdrop to your photos, don't hesitate to call. Before long the grass will turn brown and the flowers will wilt. Make your spring appointment while you can!
